The first half of the 20th century was particularly interesting, musically and culturally. While, in the 19th century, the outlines of music history were defined by a few countries only, more and more countries and continents emerged in the 20th century. The composers sometimes worked in different continents; this phenomenon is due to the increasing mobility, and to the fact that wars and unfavourable régimes have shoved the composers to greener pastures.

All this fertilized inspirations and allowed exchange of ideas. And yet, each composer remained true to his nationality and personality, but meeting easier other cultures and customs has strongly widened the points of view.

In this highly varied programme, we take you in an odyssey through the complete repertoire of the 20th century.

Not only the well-known great musical nations like Germany, Russia, Great-Britain and France are represented, but also lesser known ones, like the Czech Republic and even Brazil.

This programme shows the ensemble as it really is. On the one hand, the combination «clarinet, string instruments, song and piano» guarantees the colour unity. On the other hand, the mix of new contemporary works and of the known repertoire emphasizes the wandering, which is the very reason of the ensemble.

The vocal works of chamber music around the eternal problem of love constitute the common thread of this journey full of discoveries.

In the first part, we present two works for soprano, clarinet and piano, by Louis Spohr and Franz Schubert. In those two compositions, the clarinet allows the development of a double dialogue, as well between clarinet and voice as between piano and voice. This results in a fascinating chamber music !

The string instruments of Odysseia offer in intermezzo the Mischung quartet of the resident composer of the Ensemble, Frederik Neyrinck.

The second part opens with the wonderful "Il Tramonto" of Ottorino Respighi. Then, a sequence of short works will be performed. The contemporary compositions of Daan Janssens and Jose M. Sanchez-Verdu concentrate on the tension of silence, while the voice ensures an instrumental part in the vocalizations of Ralph Vaughan-Williams.

Finally, we play the intimate "Chanson Perpétuelle" by Ernest Chausson. After a long wandering, the warmth of the string instruments, the support of the piano and the limpidity of the soprano's voice gently bring the audience back to his own universe.
